Microsoft releasing SDK for Surface tabletop computer

By the end of this month, Microsoft is set to release a software-developer kit for its Surface tabletop computer.

This is definitely one of the most exciting technologies to come around for a while.

Who doesn't want a coffee table with multitouch?! Hellllllooooo! Awesomeness!

Last summer, Popular Mechanics wrote an explanatory story -- including some nice video -- when Microsoft unveiled its Surface technology. At the time, Microsoft had partnered with T-Mobile, Starwood Hotels and Resorts -- owner of several hotels, including Sheraton, Westin and W Hotels -- as well as Harrah's Entertainment.

An excerpt from the Popular Mechanics story:
"So you could, for instance, walk into a T-Mobile store, pick up a phone you're considering buying and place it on the Surface. The table could then either link with the phone via Bluetooth or scan a code imprinted on the packaging to identify it. Suddenly, the phone is surrounded by graphical information (pricing, features, etc.). After selecting a service plan and any accessories, you just run your credit card through a reader built into the table … and your new phone is paid for. By the time you open the package, everything is set up — all without talking to a single employee."

Obviously, we have yet to see this. Although, most people these days know multitouch because of the iPhone.

Perhaps the SDK will speed up the process of using seeing multitouch at every store we go to. And, for that matter, at every business we visit or work at. Hello, "Minority Report." Hopefully, none of us will have to get new eyes.

What do you think about Microsoft's Surface technology? How would you use it?
